Very briefly, it is important to note.
In addition to The Spider, the other six demons are:
The Wolf
The Snake
The Bird
The Fish
The Elephant
The Goat
Each of them have specific ways of eating a soul.
Each of them prefers a different flavor.
Each of them is nourished by consuming a soul while it experiences a different emotional condition.
For example...
Wolf enjoys blood-red hatred...
...like when a man seeks out and murders a stranger over some perceived flaw or weakness. Thinning the herd, one might call it. He feels that if you're not fit to survive, then you have a duty to die. It's a cutthroat outlook, sure, but only the worthy have the right to live among the wolf pack. Being shunned from the pack is more than just a death sentence - it is a grave sign of disrespect.
Snake enjoys orange-hot rage...
...like when a seemingly jovial, level-headed man succumbs to a strange, fleeting moment of intense road rage and runs an oblivious stranger off the road as they careen down a highway at 90 miles per hour. Yeah, don't tread on him. He coils up, storing energy before he finally snaps and reaches an explosive breaking point. One moment, everything seems fine. The next moment? Chaos and death.
That's The Snake for you...
Bird enjoys obsessive-levels of spite...
...like when a man pushes his limits just to screw you over. He will go full-on Count of Monte Cristo and endures years of hardship, loss and pain just to get even with someone. The Bird finds every little thing in the whole world to perpetually offensive. And once you've pissed him off, he'll never forgive, never forget. This type of nonsensical grudge and all the wreckage it causes along the way - this is what fuels The Bird.
The flavor The Fish enjoys is murky, inescapable sorrow...
...like when a man feels so alone and misunderstood that he avoids everything and everyone, letting himself sink into deep blue depression. He sinks, only to drown in overpowering, gloomy feelings of guilt and grief... The only thing more delicious to The Fish would be if this man pulls others down under the suicidal waves with him.
The flavor that The Goat enjoys is overindulgence and excess...
...like when a man overdoses on half a dozen drugs after a three-week bender at a "business" convention in Las Vegas - well, just use your imagination. It's a sickeningly greasy and cloyingly sweet taste one acquires from fast food. The Goat has every addictive vice under his thumb. The entire world-wide culture of old-school, Babylonian complacency - all the 'sex, drugs and rock n' roll' that money can buy - all of it is perpetually fueling The Goat - and this energy is always in limitless supply.
The Elephant, however, has not eaten a single thing since the board game began. In fact, every single time, The Elephant has passed his turn without taking a single action. No pawns moved. No food collected. That seems mighty unusual, doesn't it? Is The Elephant sleeping? Is The Elephant waiting for something? Does he know something the others don't? Or is he just wasting time?
The only one who finds The Elephant's antics unsettling is The Spider, who is always fearful and untrusting, given his own deceptive nature.
Because the flavor that The Spider enjoys best is prickly yellow fear...
...like when a man is so afraid of something that he would rather hide and cheat and lie to the ones he loves than face whatever terror beguiling him.
Fear is horribly toxic to the human soul.
The bite of The Spider will paralyze you with uncertainty and hesitation.
His web will freeze you in place, constricting you and preventing your escape. He'll drag you into a subconscious place while you are awake, a place where nightmares can find you and whisper during the daylight hours.
At night, in sleep, The Spider leaves you alone with your thoughts, just barely out of reach of those who could help.
These fearful thoughts will eventually wear you down. It will cause you to abandon your better judgement. It will compromise your morals and lead you toward bad behaviors.
These behaviors have the power to ruin your life if they become a part of your daily routine. The constant, pervasive fear of that inevitable ruination is what The Spider feeds off of. He can keep you alive in that state for a long, long time.
The Spider and all of his nightmarish creatures will whisper to you in the dead of night, causing you to feel weak - and then cause you to feel ashamed of that weakness.
Hiding from these feelings of fear and shame will inevitably lead to deceptive behaviors, causing you to slowly become dishonest and habitually afraid.
In a spiritual sense, you rot from the inside out.
With a snap of his fingers, so to speak, The Spider can break your mind and strip you of your free will.
So, make no mistake, dear reader: as you read his Testimony, keep your wits about you. As playful and silly as The Spider might make himself appear, he will always - /always/ - try to turn your soul into putrid yellow jelly and drink you up.
